Motor Vehicle AccidentMVA Injuries, Whiplash

If you have been injured in an automobile accident in Alberta, as a driver or passenger, you are entitled to accident benefits coverage regardless of whether you were at fault for the accident. You do not need a doctor’s referral to access Capilano Rehab Centre.

You have the right to have your injuries assessed and treated by a Physical Therapist and Centre of your choice.  We hope you choose Capilano as we have earned an outstanding reputation for our modern treatment and old-fashioned care of post-MVA injuries.

According to the Alberta Insurance Act (October 1, 2004), the post motor vehicle accident benefits you receive depend on the type of injury you have:

Sprain, Strain or a Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) I or II

Your Physical Therapist or other primary health care practitioner (chiropractor, medical doctor) does not have to seek approval of the insurer for payment for treatment of these injuries if you provide notice of your claim (complete and submit an AB-1 Form, Notice of Loss and Proof of Claim Form) within 10 days of your collision, and choose to follow the Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols (DTPR).

Once the AB-2 form has been completed, following your clinical assessment, your primary health care practitioner will be able to direct bill the automobile insurer for all treatment services outlined in the DTPR.

All patients who qualify for the DTPR can receive up to a maximum of 10-21 pre-authorized payments for treatment visits, depending on the type of injury.  These pre-authorized treatments must be completed within 90 days of the accident.

If you have still not satisfactorily recovered and the number of treatments specified under that DTPR have been insufficient to address your injuries, you can still access benefits covered under other plans or under the Section B benefits of your automobile policy.

For all other injuries, such as WAD III (neurological findings) or WAD IV (fractures, dislocations), that are diagnosed by your Physiotherapist or Doctor:

You do not qualify for the DTPR and instead will receive treatment benefits for all necessary medical expenses under the Section B benefits of your auto insurance policy.  Practically, this means that you:

A) Submit receipts for eligible assessment and treatment to your extended healthcare benefits coverage provider (e.g. Blue Cross, health spending account or similar employee health care benefits plan) for reimbursement.

B) If the following applies you may submit invoices for eligible expenses to your automobile insurer for payment.

*You do not have extended health care benefits coverage.
*Your extended health care benefits coverage is exhausted.
*Your extended health care benefits coverage does not meet the full cost of eligible expenses.

The limit on your total medical benefits under Section B including physiotherapy is $50,000. Please note that your insurer may request a formal medical assessment once $600 of Section B benefits of physiotherapy has been utilized.
