Myofascial Cupping Massage

Capilano Rehab offers Myofascial Cupping Massage as part of its professional Therapeutic Massage Therapy Program.  Myofascial cupping is an adjunct therapy technique that can further relieve pain and tightness of your sore muscles and fascia.

What Is Fascia?

Fascia is a dense irregular connective tissue which surrounds and interconnects your muscles and every single organ of the body.  It is the largest system in the body.  If the fascia is traumatized through injury or overuse, it can become dehydrated and this can lead to reduced flexibility, postural deviation and myofascial pain.

How Does Myofascial Cupping Help?

Myofascial cupping reduces pain and soreness by relaxing contracted muscles, increasing circulation, enhancing lymphatic drainage and stimulating the stretch reflex of the muscles and overlying fascia.

What Does Cupping Feel Like?

Capilano’s Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) providers warm specially designed small glass cups that are then applied over the restricted fascial area(s).  The application produces a gentle suction that is very unique and most often very pleasant.  The suction pulls away the tension and pressure from the tight and painful fascial structures.

Are There Any Cupping Side Effects?

While the cupping technique is very safe and enjoyable, myofascial cupping often leaves circular red marks on the skin from the negative pressure of the cups.  These marks can last from three to seven days before they fade away.  Patients are advised to plan their activities accordingly.  For example, if you are going to the beach or a special event the day after your cupping treatment, you may have to be prepared for people to ask you questions about the marks around your back or shoulder.

What Can Cupping Treat?

In conjunction with regular therapeutic massage, Capilano’s myofascial cupping massage can treat:

  • Chronic Upper Back Pain
  • Stiff and Sore Muscles
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Tension Headaches
