Chronic patellar tendinopathy, commonly called Jumper’s Knee,  is a chronic overuse injury of the patellar tendon that is especially prevalent in athletes who are involved in repetitive jumping activities. Volleyball and basketball are two popular sports where this injury occurs.  Radial Shockwave Physical Therapy is an effective treatment option for Jumper’s Knee when other interventions have not been satisfactory.

Recent Research on RSWT Physical Therapy Treatment

A recent study evaluated the response to physiotherapy shockwave treatment (RSWT) of jumper’s knee in a group of patients who were followed up two years after treatment.

In the study, 73 patients, aged between 15 and 69 years, with diagnosed infra-patellar tendinopathy were treated with a shockwave protocol consisting of an average of 4 sessions at a 2/7-day interval.  The patients were evaluated using visual analog scale and according to a 6-stage clinical evaluation range.

In high performing athletes, the researchers obtained good to excellent results in 87.5% of cases, with an average time of resuming sport activities of approximately 6 weeks. There were no reported complications.

The study concluded that RSWT produces satisfactory outcomes and confirmed RSWT’s role in the effective physical therapy management of patellar tendon disorders.

RSWT Physical Therapy for Other Problems

Radial Shockwave therapy has proved to be effective in many other chronic tendinopathies, including but not limited to tennis elbow, Golfer’s elbow, plantar fasciitis, heel spur syndrome and Achilles tendonitis.
